Technology helps streamline processes in the building industry
31 January 2005

GRS Roadstone and Moore Scott & Co., two key players in the United Kingdom's building industry, use Ultralogic Solutions' Synergy/DE-based applications on OpenVMS to manage their daily business operations.

Some History
GRS Roadstone Ltd., a provider of primary aggregates and recycled products to the building and civil engineering industries, was using an ageing commercial application that was written in DIBOL and running on an OpenVMS VAX system. When their business started to grow, they knew they needed to increase the application's performance significantly. The first step was to migrate the GRS system to Synergy/DE in order to take advantage of new technology. Then, they moved GRS to a larger OpenVMS Alpha 6.2 system to accommodate their growing processing and data needs.

"GRS' application is continually evolving and relies on Synergy/DE to enable this growth," comments John Driscoll, managing director at Ultralogic Solutions Ltd. "The reliability of their Synergy/DE-built application has been a significant factor in GRS' success. The management of the new OpenVMS system is also much simpler and easier to automate."

Moore Scott & Co. Ltd. is one of the United Kingdom's leading suppliers of bricks, building blocks, natural and reconstituted stone, and rain screen walling systems. They needed an application to run their business, and Ultralogic suggested they use the same system that GRS uses. After Ultralogic customized the system to meet Moore Scott's unique needs, the application was a perfect fit.

"We decided to use OpenVMS for Moore Scott as well because of its stability, combined with our need to get the new system up and running as quickly as possible with minimal training requirements," said John.

"The inherent stability of Ultralogic's system on OpenVMS - where uptime is measured in years not days - in combination with our confidence in the security of the data means that we can concentrate on running our business without worrying about whether or not the system will be available," says Christine Meadows, director at Moore Scott.

Ultralogic Solutions and Moore Scott now plan to use xfODBC and XML technologies in their Synergy/DE-based application.

The Synergy/DE and OpenVMS solutions Both GRS and Moore Scott use Ultralogic's system to manage all of their daily business functions, including order processing, delivery tracking, invoicing, sales ledger, purchase ledger, nominal ledger and financial reporting.

"The reliability of GRS' and Moore Scott's systems is one of their biggest plus points," exclaims John Driscoll. "The hardware, operating system, and application system are all extremely stable, which means there is never a problem with data loss or corruption." The other big advantage is the flexibility of both systems. GRS and Moore Scott can request changes and know that they will be made seamlessly and consistently, with minimal disruption to their users. John continues, "This is possible because of the design of the underlying system, which is heavily dependent on the modularity and flexibility of both Synergy/DE and OpenVMS."

Building a future
Future plans for both GRS and Moore Scott include increased data accessibility and improved reporting options, particularly for management information purposes. John is confident that these and future development requirements can be met by "building on the strength of their existing Synergy/DE-based application running on OpenVMS."

We also showed examples of other organisations who have launched or renewed their website with our assistance.

Plus - we offered companies ideas on how to improve their use of technology in the 21st century.

If you were unable to attend or want more information on what Ultralogic Solutions can do for you and your business, drop us an e-mail now.
