Tip of the year - Employees working from home
When an employee is asked to work from home, consideration needs to be given to health and safety, as well as the effect on tax and national insurance.
You do not need to tell HMRC if the employee is provided with equipment that is only used for business or when any private use is minimal. You can also pay the employee up to £6 a week or £26 a month (from 6th April 2020) for any additional homeworking costs - such as heating or electricity.
Employers have the same health and safety responsibilities for home workers as for all other workers. The HSE government website gives additional guidance on this, including lone working, mental health and how to stay in contact.
Picture of the year - Snowy Owl
The only Snowy Owls to be found in Britain are in zoos or sanctuaries - or raised by birds of prey fanciers. The females are larger but the male birds are a purer white colour. This lady is still a relatively young chick and is not yet full size.
